Wallpaper History From The 17th Century To The Present

Wallpaper from 1867

The Whitworth Art Gallery in Machester currently has a collection of wallpaper designs from the 17th century until today. Nowadays wallpaper is seen as something tacky and old fashioned you might see in your grandparents kitchen. Tune into any home makeover show and a designer will gasp in sheer horror if wallpaper is seen glued to any surface. But did you know that wallpaper was once regulated for the wealthy and seen as a decadent status symbol?

In the past only the rich were able to afford something that took quite a bit of time and craftsmanship. Some wallpaper sheets even included gold leaf. (via Apartment Therapy)

“Miss Brahms, Are You Free?” were words asked by Wendy Richard’s co-workers on the hit British television show “Are You Being Served?”. Richard  played the pretty, ditzy, Cockney accented Grace Brothers employee Miss Shirley Brahms in the comedy which ran from the early seventies until the mid eighties. I’d watch these reruns on PBS everyday when I was younger and it introduced me to the hilarity of British humour.

After a long struggle with cancer, the funny lady died at a hospital in Westminster London yesterday.

Below is a clip from “Are You Being Served?” and Wendy speaks in all her Cockneyed glory around 3:15.

Mother Rewards Daughter With Cigarettes

I hope I won’t be blinded by love for my child when I have one like 43-year old Tracy Holt. Not only is she aware that her 13-year old daughter Sam is sexually active, drinks, and smokes (ciggies and pot), she thinks it’s “sweet”. Though I commend the elder Holt for teaching her daughter about safe sex after finding out the younger Holt lost her virginity at 12, there’s something lacking when the child has admitted to having had four sexual partners in less than a year.

Tracy brushes off Sam’s behavior by looking at the positive side of things. On her daughter drinking a couple of cans a beer a night: “…I’m lucky she isn’t a proper drunk.” On punishment: “If I ground her, I’m just punishing myself because I have to put up with her in the house. Instead, I reward her good behaviour by giving her cigarettes. If she’s bad, she goes without.” Miss Holt also blames the school Sam formerly attended for her bad behavior record with teachers and administration citing they were “too soft”. Link! Former Mr. Gay UK turned chef Anthony Morley was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison for the murder of lover Damian Oldfield who, evidence shows, Morley then cut pieces of flesh from, cooked in oil and herbs, and proceeded to eat.

Morley stated he was defending himself from an attempted rape by Oldfield, but could not explain the cannibalism.

As Morley hung his head in court, Judge James Stewart QC commented how this was one of the most gruesome cases he’s presided over. Not only did you murder your victim by cutting his throat and stabbing him but you cut him up, cooked him and ate part of him. Before this case I had associated cannibalism with eras long gone, with the tale of Robinson Crusoe. No longer. You have plumbed depths rarely encountered in our court.” Link! (via The BBC)

Badass Of The Day

Meet Janet Lane of the U.K. A 68-year-old grandmother who decided she wasn’t going to be taken advantage of when some punk kids tried to run away with her bag.

With no time to think rationally, the former high school cross country running champion took to her instincts and ran after the group. She caught up with one of them and grabbed him by the collar. Scared shitless, he dropped her bag but was able to squirm his way out of her grip.

“Thinking about it now I suppose it was a silly thing to do for a pensioner, but I just thought, ‘What gives them the right?’. I stretch every penny of my pension out to make ends meet and I’m not having someone take it.” Link! (via Daily Mail)

15-Year Old Suspended For Bringing Hash Cakes To School

Posted in Diversity with tags , , , , , on October 7, 2008 by TheDiversePurse

vickypollardFollowing the hospitalization of two teaching assistants at Wortley High School in Leeds in the U.K after consuming (unbeknownst to them apparently) “hash cakes” on September 10, the 15-year old student who brought them has since changed schools. She was suspended initially, but no legal charges were made against the youth.

I need to follow-up on this story because those cakes must’ve been laced with something else. You don’t go to the hospital for weed. Link!

Flashback Friday! (Back To Life-Soul II Soul)

If “Back To Life” came out today, it would still be a hit!

Besides other 80’s artists Monie Love and Slick Rick, Soul II Soul was my favorite UK import. *Sigh* Music companies just don’t promote positive black music anymore.
Vodpod videos no longer available.
