12 Year Old Fatally Shoots 2 Year Old Cousin

Posted in News, R.I.P., WTF?! with tags , , , , , , , on January 9, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

With the families pocessions gathered in piles throughout their home in East Palo Alto California, in preparation for being sent back to Tonga, a 12-year old boy and his 2-year old cousin were in a bedroom playing around 11pm Thursday night. The 12-year old, who is now in child protective custody, reportedly wanted to “show off” and retrieved a small caliber rifle, which the family didn’t know was secretly left by a friend. Unbeknownst to the child the gun was loaded.

“The older boy didn’t realize the gun was loaded and shot it. The bullet struck the toddler in the chest. Crews raced the toddler to the hospital, where he pronounced dead.

According to (Detective) Sanchez, the gun belongs to a family friend, whom he would not identify. But he said police are looking for this East Palo Alto man for questioning.”

So sad.

Body Of Missing Baby Found

Baby John Uaisele

Baby John Uaisele

Around Halloween, I saw on the local news a horrible story of a car accident which sent a truck into a murky canal in Oakland, CA. The driver, 25-year old Sione Petelo Uaisele, was killed instantly. His wife, Mary, and their 1-year old daughter Margaret were in the truck as well, but managed to escape. But sadly the couples 9-month old baby, John, was ejected from the car into the trash infested canal in deep East Oakland.

Police searched the polluted waters all day, but decided to call off the search claiming the water, and time of day, was too dark and there wasn’t enough visibility. That did not deter friends, family, and other volunteers from going into the polluted canal, without the aid of equipment that police may have had access to, where they were able to recover the small body of the baby. “I’m just glad they found him. I want to bury him with my husband,” a recovering Mary Uaisele told reporters.

My condolences go out to this young and beautiful Tongan family. May they find strength and stay strong.

The New York Times has a nice article highlighting Tongan football players Ofa Faiva-Siale, Sione Moeakiola, and Fotu Katoa as they gain popularity in the town of Euless Texas where a lot of folks don’t even know what they are. Offensive tackle Uatakina Cocker recounts a usual post-game conversation:
“Are you Mexican?”

“Polynesian.”

“Samoan?”

“Tongan.”

“O.K., because you would be a very big Mexican.” LOL. I’m SO familiar with that what-are-you game as well. Link!

It’s time to rewind with a video from the Wolfgramm family a.k.a. The Jets, hailing from Minnesota via Tonga. This was the shit back in the day! Especially as a young Hawaiian growing up in the 80’s, it was (and is) rare to see other Polynesians in mainstream media. So, here’s their 1987 hit “You Got It All”
