RhianBensonNicoleScherzingerDoesn’t the Welsh/Ghanaian singer Rhian Benson bear a resemblance to fellow songstress mixed-Hawaiian Nicole Scherzinger?

In some shots from Rhian’s video “Say How I Feel”, I swear they could be sisters.

Keanu Reeves Agrees To Paternity Test

Posted in Entertainment, Movies with tags , , , , , , , , , , on September 3, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

KarenSalaKeanuReevesAn Ontario woman named Karen Sala recently filed a claim against fellow Canadian and actor Keanu Reeves stating he is the father of “at least one” of her four children who are now all in their twenties.

At the urging of his attorney, Lorne Wolfson, Reeves has agreed to submit his DNA in order to prove he is not the father of any of Sala’s children. If the results are negative then Reeves will not be paying the whopping $150,000 per month in child support or the $3,000,000 per month spousal support Sala is seeking in the case. (via TMZ)

For those Panic at the Disco fans – no need to start pulling your eyelashes out. According to their official website, it appears lead singer Brenden Urie (he’s Hawaiian on his mother’s side. Go figure!) and co-founder/drummer Spencer Smith are still members while co-founder/guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker are venturing off to do their own thing.

“Though the four of us have made music together in the past, we’ve creatively evolved in different directions which has compromised what each of us want to personally achieve. Over the years, we have remained close and honest with each other, which helped us to realize that our goals were different and that parting ways is truly what is best for each of us. We are all excited for the future, you should be too.”

Spotted! Lola Iolani and Nakoa-Wolf!

lolaiolaninakoawolfThe Young, Black, and Fabulous blog spotted Lilakoi Moon aka Lisa Bonet stepping out with her two youngest children, from partner Jason Momoa, in tow. Lilakoi carried her almost-two-year old Lola Iolani while a nanny(?) held Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha.

They’re both so cute! And I am so jealous of Lilakoi still looking youthful with her post-baby glow. Link!

Flashback Friday! (Rush, Rush-Paula Abdul)

abdulreevesrushLet’s go back to the early 90’s to a pre-American Idol Paula Abdul where she tried her acting chops in this long ass melodramatic video with Keanu Reeves for “Rush Rush” from her Spellbound album.

I’m guessing this is set in the 1940’s / 1950’s, yet Keanu always brings out that damn surfer/stoner boy accent which I’m sure didn’t exist yet. He was still hot though.

It’s kinda cute watching them romance each other because Paula looks like his little sister. She’s so tiny! Both of their performances should’ve garnered Academy Awards though *cough*

Kai Kalama Cut From American Idol

Posted in Entertainment, Music, Spot The Poly, Television, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 27, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

kaikalamaTo invoke Florida Evans, played by the late great Esther Rolle on Good Times, “Damn. Dammmnn. Daaaammnnn!”

Poly Kai Kalama was cut from American Idol last night. Judges branded him too “safe” and I guess voters agreed. I think he’s an awesome crooner and has a beautiful voice, but the American Idol platform isn’t for him. They want someone they can mold into a pop tart zombie. I think Kai is too mature and laid back for the lifestyle he might lead if he were to win. I do agree with the judges and believe he has a bright future as a backup singer. That’s how Luther Vandross started out, right? I think we’ll be hearing good things about this Hawaiian in the future.

Polynesians On American Idol

Posted in Entertainment, Music, Spot The Poly, Television, Uncategorized, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 24, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

During season 3, Jonah Moananu made it to the top 32 and now we have not 1 but 2 Polys competing to be the next American Idol! I actually haven’t watched American Idol in years but I happened to catch a re-run of the SF auditions when the show interviewed Kai Kalama. Hmmm, that sounded Hawaiian to me. After some Googling, I found he and his brother, Ryan along with Kent Graves, are in a band called Off White.

From their MySpace page: “The Kalama Brothers grew up in a desert climate, which drove them inside to discover MTV. And by discover they mean devour. Being from Hawaiian descent, the Kalama’s never forgot their embedded need to melt hearts; but also had a great hunger to melt minds as well. The Kalama family is not only big in size, but big on each other. Mom taught them to sing via the church choir and Dad taught from the stage.” I’ll be watching upcoming episodes to see if the Kanaka Maoli makes it.

Later when I checked the American Idol website, I was pleasantly surprised to see that another Poly besides Kalama had made it to the Hollywood auditions. Taylor Vaifanua, who is Samoan, won her ticket when she sang “Joyful Joyful” in Salt Lake City. She’s only 16, but is one of the favorites so far. I wish both of them luck! Watch below for their auditions (sorry about the crappy quality).

Lisa Bonet And Jason Momoa Welcome A Son

Lilakoi Moon aka Lisa Bonet and her beau Jason Momoa welcomed their second child. A son by the name of Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa. Like the couples 20 month year old daughter, Lola Iolani Momoa, their new son also has a name with Hawaiian roots and meaning.

On her fan forum, she states how she chose his name and the significance behind it:

“He was born on the stormest, rainy night.

so Nakoa(warrior)…Mana(strength/spirit) Kaua(rain) po(dark)…

The name was always going to be Nakoa-Wolf, but Jason did the research on first middle name, 2nd middle name as you know is Jason’s.”

I love it! I was reading comments on other sites and some of them are pretty negative. Hawaiian names are usually long and have some spiritual/family significance. Mine is pretty long as well and I’m proud of it and my Hawaiian roots, so let the haters hate, Momoa family! Congratulations!
