Flashback Friday! (3-5-7-Wild N’ Loose)

oaktown357Tabitha “Terrible T” King and DJuana “Sweet L.D.” Johnican started out as backup dancers for MC Hammer back in the late 80’s early 90’s but they soon ventured out on their own to form Oaktown 3-5-7. Their biggest hit was “Juicy Gotcha Krazy”, but my favorite was “Wild & Loose”. I mean, what’s not to like about the video? There’s a little bit of everything: spandex, Hammer pants, tigers, bubble baths, beauty salons, bumpin’ n grindin’, Gumby fades, the list goes on. Maybe Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is a fan too? Did you see the silhouettes against neon colors throughout the video?

I remember watching this on Soul Beat (“TV Network number ooooonnnnnnneeeeeee!!!!”) and breaking a sweat trying to mimic their dance moves. These ladies were in shape!

Check out Big Man blowin’ at around the 3:20 mark.

Tuesday Eye Candy – Boris Kodjoe

boriskodjoe01Name: Boris Frederic Cecil Tay-Natey Ofuatey-Kodjoe
DOB: March 8, 1973 in Vienna Austria
Claim to fame: I would say he gained a lot of attention when he appeared in Showtime’s series “Soul Food” based on the hit movie of the same name. He played Damon, the biracial (Black and White) trilingual (German, French, and Portuguese) blue-collar worker who falls in love with an older woman (played by his future wife Nicole Ari-Parker).

Background: Every since I saw him in TLC’s “Red Light Special” video way back in 1994 (before he started shaving his head), I wanted to know who that handsome man was. Turns out he and his Soul Food character Damon share a somewhat similar background.
Boris was born in Austria, but was raised in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg (specifically Freiburg) to a German mother and a Ghanian father. He is also multilingual as he speaks fluent German, English, French, and Spanish. While attending the Virginia Commonwealth University, he aspired to be a professional tennis player but back ailments unfortunately took him out of the game. Luckily, for fans, this change of events led to his becoming a model and later into acting.

Flashback Friday! (Face Down Ass Up-2 Live Crew)

"Glad I skipped work to come here today"

"Glad I skipped work to come here today"

This is 2 Live Crew appearing on the Phil Donahue show back in 1990 performing “Face Down Ass Up” (so, yeah, turn down your speakers if you’re at work).

I love some of the audience members reactions!

If you’re too young to remember the Phil Donahue show – Jerry Springer it was not. Donahue still had some controversial guests, but rarely was there an expected fight. Most of his audience consisted primarily of the older, conservative type so I’m sure they weren’t ready for the gyrations and booty poppin’ that was on display. This is hilarious!

Flashback Friday! (Rush, Rush-Paula Abdul)

abdulreevesrushLet’s go back to the early 90’s to a pre-American Idol Paula Abdul where she tried her acting chops in this long ass melodramatic video with Keanu Reeves for “Rush Rush” from her Spellbound album.

I’m guessing this is set in the 1940’s / 1950’s, yet Keanu always brings out that damn surfer/stoner boy accent which I’m sure didn’t exist yet. He was still hot though.

It’s kinda cute watching them romance each other because Paula looks like his little sister. She’s so tiny! Both of their performances should’ve garnered Academy Awards though *cough*

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Flashback Friday! (Treat ‘Em Right-Chubb Rock)

I was about 10 when Chubb Rock’s “Treat ‘Em Right” was a hit at many house parties during the early 1990’s. By the way, did anyone watch the preview for the “From G’s to Gent’s” reunion? Host Fonzworth Bentley is trying to bring back the Gumby fade like the main dancer in the video below. Ugh! No!

Here’s the 90’s hit “How Bizarre” from Maori group OMC AND 90’s classic “Pop Up Video”. When I first heard this back in the day, I thought it was a Latin group because it had an island flavor to it but when I saw the video I realized my island hunch was right, but it was actually Aotearoa aka New Zealand because the lead singer was obviously Polynesian.

Pauly Fuemana was so hot. Too bad he wasn’t flanked, besides the backup singer, by any Poly beauties in the video. And is it me, or does he look hella high?

What happened to Pop Up Video anyway? I’m a big trivia person so I use to love this show! Oh, well. At least I can WATCH PAST EPISODES ON VH1.

Happy Valentines Day Flashback Edition! (Pretty Brown Eyes-Mint Condition)

Posted in Entertainment, Flashback Fridays!, Music, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , on February 14, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

This would’ve been more suitable for a Flashback Friday, but I think it fits even better on Valentines which falls fairly close this year on a Saturday.

Mint Condition was a popular R&B group back in the early/mid 90’s with hits like “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” (posted below), “What Kind of Man Would I Be?”, and “Forever In Your Eyes”.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and hearing women squeal, “That’s my song!” when this came through the speakers. I’m glad fades and vests won’t be making a comeback anytime soon.
