If you grew up in the 80’s and had MTV, you’d remember the corny, yet popular, game show “Remote Control”. It was a mix between a game show and sketch comedy.

Former host Ken Ober was found unconscious at his home in Santa Monica. There are no reports as to what caused his death, although his agent stated Ober was recently complaining of “…headaches and flu-like symptoms.”

Here’s a clip below with contestants LL Cool J, Julie Brown, and Weird Al Yankovic

Flashback Friday! (Moments In Love-Art Of Noise)

I freakin’ found it! I couldn’t remember the name of this song of the group for the life of me. I didn’t have much to go on besides a haunting beat and a music video involving ice skating, masks, and an eerie undertone. Well, after much searching the mystery is solved. It was Moments in Love by the Art of Noise from 1983.

Doesn’t it seem like the 80’s were full of music videos and movies involving European aristocrat balls and the 16th / 17th centuries all together?

Flashback Friday! (Slick Rick-Teenage Love)

When asked about hip-hop ballads, most people will automatically think of the LL Cool J classic I Need Love off of his Bigger and Deffer album. Who didn’t love that song when it came out?

But right up there, I would have to say, is the overlooked Teenage Love by Slick Rick from 1988’s The Great Adventures of Slick. The beat was sick and his lyrics were on point. I love the part where he sings, “Do you know where you’re going to…” sampled from Mahogany. Who did that?! I think he was one of the firsts (if not the first) to mimic someone elses lyrics and singing style and not just sample their beat.

Anyway, the video is full of 80’s goodness like big-ass-Goldie-lookin’ fur coats, even bigger gold chains, and even a cameo by Big Daddy Kane.

Flashback Friday! (3-5-7-Wild N’ Loose)

oaktown357Tabitha “Terrible T” King and DJuana “Sweet L.D.” Johnican started out as backup dancers for MC Hammer back in the late 80’s early 90’s but they soon ventured out on their own to form Oaktown 3-5-7. Their biggest hit was “Juicy Gotcha Krazy”, but my favorite was “Wild & Loose”. I mean, what’s not to like about the video? There’s a little bit of everything: spandex, Hammer pants, tigers, bubble baths, beauty salons, bumpin’ n grindin’, Gumby fades, the list goes on. Maybe Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is a fan too? Did you see the silhouettes against neon colors throughout the video?

I remember watching this on Soul Beat (“TV Network number ooooonnnnnnneeeeeee!!!!”) and breaking a sweat trying to mimic their dance moves. These ladies were in shape!

Check out Big Man blowin’ at around the 3:20 mark.

Gone Too Soon

Gone Too Soon

In memory of the late-great legend that was Michael Jackson here are two clips only highlighting the surface that was his long, extensive, and inspirational career.

First is Michael, with the also legendary Diana Ross, lending his vocal as well as his acting talent in 1978’s The Wiz singing Ease On Down The Road. He played The Scarecrow with an innocence and sweet nature where, I think, the gave an audience a peek on the performer himself.

The second video, below, shows Michael with his brothers The Jacksons in the special effects laden Can You Feel It from 1980. This was after the success of his Off the Wall album, but before 1982’s Thriller which would catapult him to superstardom.

Having died unexpectedly and at a young age, it was a shock to me as well as many throughout the world who was touched by his music and spectacular performances. These videos are just two of the many songs that I’ve loved throughout the years whether I heard it on viynl, cassette tapes, the radio, cd’s, or my mp3 player. He will be deeply missed, but his music will live on as they no doubt will keep inspiring older fans as well as the millions of new ones yet to hear his albums.

Flashback Friday! (GLOW-Mt. Fiji)

Does anyone remember GLOW? The Jackie Stallone promoted women only wrestling show from the 80’s? I pretty much forgot about it until a friend of mine posted a video of their intro where the ladies would rap! Yes rap was still fresh at the time and everybody thought they could do it (don’t believe me? Click HERE for Rodney Dangerfield and HERE for “Average Homeboy” Denny Blaze).

My favorite, of course, was Mt. Fiji played by the Samoan athlete Emily Dole. I just remember seeing big hair and her big smile when she kicked ass in the ring. Aside from her stint on GLOW, she appeared in Mama’s Family as part of the Masked Mables and Pauly Shore’s movie “Son In Law”.

Whatever happened to her? I found two recent articles from an Orange County newspaper. The first was from 2007 as she states what her goals are for her 50th birthday. The second article was from 2008, where she’s interviewed from a nursing home.

Below is a clip of the GLOW women making an appearance on gameshow Card Sharks where Emily famously hoists host Bob Eubanks over her head. This lady is awesome. (It starts aroun the 2:52 mark).

It’s that time again! So break out that costume and candy and have a great time while we flashback with a little of Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me”.
