Hines Ward Helps Bi-Racial Youths Deal With Discrimination In South Korea

Posted in International, News, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 9, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

HinesWardPittsburgh Steeler, and 2006 MVP, Hines Ward recently hosted a group of eight bi-racial Korean youths to discuss their stories of discrimination, taunts, and banishment they’ve received in South Korea. One teenager even re-told his attempt at suicide as an escape from the harsh treatment he’s received as an Amerasian. Sadly, according to statistics, children of mixed unions often end up in poverty and are prone to suicide due to how they are treated in Korean society.

Ward, who himself is Korean on his mother’s side and African-American on his father’s side, hopes to change the children’s perspectives as well as the people of Korea. To do this, he established the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation; which fights to end racism against biracial Koreans.

“It’s a great culture. I love everything about it. But there’s a dark side to that culture. And me, I’m just trying to shed a light on that dark side and make Korea a better place than it already is.”

Wow. Sexy, athletic, and compassionate. He’s a triple threat! LINK

Nude Olympics To Be Held In San Francisco

Posted in Entertainment, International, WTF?! with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 5, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

ancientgreeceolympicsThe U.S. may have lost out to sunny Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, but who needs clothed athletes when you can head out to San Francisco for the Second Annual Nude Beach Olympics? Set to take place October 10th at Baker Beach, participants won’t be competing for gold, silver, or bronze but instead taking a cue from ancient Greece and vying for wreaths made of olive branches.

“Events include the 100-, 500-, and 1,000-meter dashes (though, on foot and in the sand, “dash” may be the incorrect word. Would “jangle” work?); ancient Greek wrestling (“No slugging, kicking, biting, or gouging”); sumo wrestling (same set of forbidden moves); discus (actually, a frisbee is involved); broad jump (nude broad-jumping … make your own pun); volleyball; and touch football.” Link!

The Grillwalker Is Big Business In Berlin

Grillwalker

The New York Times reports of a popular new service taking the streets of Berlin by storm – The Grillwalker; a portable cooking system that grills up sausages for consumers on-the-go. It’s a trendy invention that no doubt catches the eyes of potential customers especially since they’re found roaming commuter heavy sites like train stations. I personally couldn’t carry 44lbs of propane tank, metal grill, sausages, bread, and condiments.

Another Child Found To Cry Tears Of Blood

Posted in Fitness & Health, International, News, WTF?! with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 11, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

georgebuchanantwinkleI posted earlier about U.S. teenager Calvino Inman and the mystery involving random tears of blood flowing from his eyes. Doctors and his mother are baffled. But, halfway across the world, a little girl in India is experiencing the same situation.

National Geographic filmed a young girl by the name of Twinkle, who bleeds from her eyes, head, palms, and other random spots, as she was tested by an American doctor to find the cause of so-called stigmata.

The news special doesn’t air until September 13th, but according to the National Geographic website Dr. George Buchanan has already made his conclusion after visiting Twinkle.

“The pattern and nature of her bleeding really fits with no known bleeding disorder.  Although I am always willing to give patients and their families the benefit of the doubt (and maybe indeed Twinkle’s has something totally unique, previously undiscovered and inconsistent with known medical science), I think that her bleeding is brought on in some way purposefully (motive unknown) by Twinkle and/or her mother.  To confirm with this, we need to observe a bleeding event right from the start.  The best way to do this would likely be prolonged direct observation 24 hours daily in a controlled medical setting.”

Festival Gets Creative With Flags Made Of Food

Posted in Arts & Crafts, Food & Drink, International with tags , , , , , , , on September 8, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

Italyfoodflag

The Sydney International Food Festival takes place next month and as part of their media campaign they have released an array of photographs showcasing international flags made of food that is indigneous to that particular part of the world. For example in the picture above fresh basil, al dente pasta, and ripe cherry tomatoes are used to look like the Italian flag.

It’s a very cute and creative way to represent the food festival and the World Chef Showcase that will be spotlighted in Sydney as well. (via Huffington Post)

New Survivor Location Is – Samoa

Posted in Entertainment, International, Television, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 4, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

survivorsamoaNow that Season 18, Survivor: Tocantins, has wrapped fans of the show wondered what exotic locale would be chosen for the next series. Survivor 19, which is currently accepting applications, will be set on the island of Samoa. There’s no word yet on how teams will be split up this time or what, if any, twists will be involved.

This will be the fifth series set within the Polynesian Triangle. Previous seasons included the Marquesas, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, and Fiji.

I rolled my eyes when the announcer says (and video is shown) “…and a fierce warrior culture” though. Yeah, most people from around the world come from a warrior culture but the trailer is portraying this as if it’s still going on to this day. C’mon now. Oh, and I hope Jeff Probst works on his pronunciation of “Samoa” before the season actually airs. Haha.
