18-year-olds Eilish (l) and Declan (r) experiment with Manba

British teens Eilish (l) and Declan (r) experiment with Manba

Manba is a form of the Ganguro or Yamanba style that became popular with twenty-something Japanese women in the early 1990’s as a form of rebellion against the more traditional view of beauty in the east of a porcelain skin doll. The most shocking of this statement is the heavily tanned skin, white lips, and neon colored hair followers sport. For them it is a form of expression.

Now that message has been picked up by a growing number of British people fascinated with Japanese culture and how they express individuality. The BBC interviewed two British teenagers, Eilish and Declan, to find out what got them started with this trend.

“Declan and Eilish say they have been accused of racism for darkening their skin in this way, but they say this could not be further from the truth.

Eilish insists that she is ‘not mocking anybody’ and Declan asks, ‘what black person looks like this?’

Another member of the group says that she does not like her white skin and covers up if she is unable to get a spray tan.

‘I just think it looks good – nowadays it’s more popular to be tanned,’ Declan adds.”

I’ve posted previously HERE about the horrible crimes committed against African albinos, but a friend recently brought up a new model who’s making a striking impact in the fashion world.

Her name is Diandra Forrest and she is an African-American albino from the Bronx who was discovered by photographer Shameer Khan as she walked down the streets of Manhattan. She’s currently signed with a major agency and has been featured in various magazines.

I doubt her exposure in fashion will impact the atrocities going on in small villages in Africa, but who knows? Even in industrialized nations, albinos (I hope that is the correct term) are seen as mysterious, evil, or non-human in much of our media and/or entertainment outlets.

I think she’s absolutely fabulous and I hope to see her become a household name. Maybe she’ll be the catalyst to help the world see that people with albinism are just that: people.

Are Girls Being Brainwashed To Like The Color Pink?

Posted in Fashion, Uncategorized with tags , , , on January 2, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

Some parents are saying yes. When it comes to buying toys and clothing for little girls some parents are sick of being bombarded with the color pink. They feel marketers, in the past and with full force more recently, are making products offered to young people sexist. They believe products are reinforcing/ingraining gender stereotypes and roles within society.

Sue Palmer, author of Toxic Childhood says, “It’s just so insidious and it shows how commercial forces can get under their skin even by that age (by age 3)”. Link! (via Daily Telegraph)

Neat! Grocery Bag Jewelry!

For the crafty, here’s an awesome project from the Instructables website that turns plastic grocery bags into beautiful jewelry. Instead of throwing those hard-to-decompose bags away, make some earrings (above) or a necklace to close-the-recycling-loop! See, don’t you feel better by wearing something gorgeous and helping the environment in 2009? Link!

LeBron James And Nicole Scherzinger In New Nike Commercial

Posted in Entertainment, Fashion, Television, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on November 6, 2008 by TheDiversePurse

“That’s genuine leather right there, baby.”
Basketball star LeBron James and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger actually do decent acting jobs in this new promo commercial for Nike entitled “After Six” for his new Nike Zoom Lebron VI kicks.

LeBron plays a good suave-like character to Nicole’s sexy, yet ditzy on screen persona. I was hella laughing when LeBron, after giving Nicole her present, to “take that paper outta there.”

The sneakers (and those red pumps Nicole wears) are hot. I might need to buy some for myself.

Nicole Scherzinger Is A Freak

The Pussycat Dolls performed some of their hits at the Royal Opera House in Sydney Australia yesterday and it seems Nicole Scherzinger has a liking for PVC gear. She showed up at London’s Vodafone Music awards last month in a black PVC dress, which I posted HERE, and here she is in Sydney. Maybe all this PVC material, usually found in a dominatrix’ closet, is a tie-in with the title of the new album “Doll Domination”. But I’d like to think Nicole is actually a freak who makes her English race car champion beau Lewis Hamilton her personal gimp a la Pulp Fiction.

Bruno Crashes The Runway

Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing another one of his characters from Da Ali G show to the big screen. This time as the flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion show host “Bruno”. While filming (this is the rumored title) “Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt” in Milan, Cohen decided to work the catwalk much to the surprise of the spectators and designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. After security escorted him from the stage, the show went on showcasing the designer frocks.
