RhianBensonNicoleScherzingerDoesn’t the Welsh/Ghanaian singer Rhian Benson bear a resemblance to fellow songstress mixed-Hawaiian Nicole Scherzinger?

In some shots from Rhian’s video “Say How I Feel”, I swear they could be sisters.

Madonna Hearts Glee

Posted in Entertainment, Music, Television, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 23, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

MadonnaGleeEither that or she’s a savvy businesswoman and getting in on the Glee bandwagon while it’s hot. Turns out Madonna has granted the hit show rights to her entire song catalog.

Creator of Glee, Ryan Murphy, hinted at an all Madonna episode in the works for next year.

As a fan of the corny, yet cute, show myself here’s a list of the songs that I think would fit with some of the characters and their storylines thus far:

“Like A Virgin” – Quinn Fabrey – This would be only fitting for her to sing as this snooty, cheerleader who’s President of the Abstinence Club discovers she’s pregnant herself.

“Secret” – Finn Hudson – As Quinn’s boyfriend and assumed baby’s daddy, Finn is still in the dark about the actual sperm donor.

“Express Yourself” – Mercedes Jones – This song has Mercedes written all over it; sassy, bold, and unapologetic.

“What It Feels Like For A Girl” – Sue Sylvester – I know Coach Sue isn’t really a part of the Glee Club, but maybe she could sing in some sort of fantasy sequence. I think underneath that cold, mean, seemingly asexual exterior is a misunderstood kitten.

“Vogue” – Artie Abrams – He’s awesome at doing the same dance routines as the other members while in his wheelchair. It would be cute to see them stay still and let Artie do his thing.

“Human Nature” – Kurt Hummel – With his friends and father supportive of him since confirming that he’s gay, this should be a perfect song for the now unstoppable, more confident Kurt.

“Sorry” – Rachel Berry – Miss Overachiever caught in a love triangle with Quinn and Finn is probably practicing her routine for this song right now.

“Angel” – Emma Pillsbury – This uptight, germaphobe could be shown singing this while lighting candles at her Will Schuester alter (you know she has one). LINK!

Father Damien Made A Saint

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on October 19, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

FatherDamiendeVeusterBelgian missionary Father Damien de Veuster, better known as simply Father Damien, was recently made a saint by Pope Benedict XVI. Damien is well known throughout the world for living among those living with Hansen’s disease on the island of Molokai where he ultimately contracted the disease himself.

Before him, the settlement on Kalaupapa was basically a dumping ground for human beings afflicted with this illess to forge for themselves without any sort of medical care. With his goodwill, tenacity, and reputed temper, Father Damien was able to build a sense of community to residents who’d felt abandoned otherwise.

President Obama, who grew up in Hawaii at one point in his life, stated that people everywhere should take an example from Father Damien in our attitudes towards diseases by “answering the urgent call to heal and care for the sick.” LINK!

Son Finds Father After 36 Years On Facebook

McKibbenNabineauxFormer Marine Vietnam Vet Pete McKibben was shrouded with thoughts of his Vietnamese girlfriend, Ko Kim Lien, and their son whom he’d never met.

During the war, uncontrollable circumstances forced them apart and for 36 years McKibben had tried in vain to search for them. But recently his luck changed for the better when he received an email via Facebook from a man living in Paris by the name of Richard Nabineaux. After a few short exchanges, father and son were reunited. They hope to meet in person, for the first time, by the end 2009.

The Daily Beast has compiled a gallery of politicians who at one point or another have crossdressed whether as a life choice or for fun. This comes on the heels of former mayor of Cleveland Eric Brewer losing re-election after pictures of him dressed in lingerie were leaked to the local media.

One prominent politician TDB omitted was New Zealand Member of Parliment Georgina Beyer. Although not a crossdresser, but a transsexual, I would think she’d make the list as her identity didn’t deter her gaining office unlike many in the gallery. Link!

Nude Olympics To Be Held In San Francisco

Posted in Entertainment, International, WTF?! with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 5, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

ancientgreeceolympicsThe U.S. may have lost out to sunny Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, but who needs clothed athletes when you can head out to San Francisco for the Second Annual Nude Beach Olympics? Set to take place October 10th at Baker Beach, participants won’t be competing for gold, silver, or bronze but instead taking a cue from ancient Greece and vying for wreaths made of olive branches.

“Events include the 100-, 500-, and 1,000-meter dashes (though, on foot and in the sand, “dash” may be the incorrect word. Would “jangle” work?); ancient Greek wrestling (“No slugging, kicking, biting, or gouging”); sumo wrestling (same set of forbidden moves); discus (actually, a frisbee is involved); broad jump (nude broad-jumping … make your own pun); volleyball; and touch football.” Link!

Mathematics Theme A Big Hit For New Graphic Novel

Posted in Entertainment with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 5, 2009 by TheDiversePurse

Logicomix“Logicomix” was a best seller in the author’s, Apostolos Doxiadis, native Greece when it was released last year and now number-fiends in the U.S. can get their hands on this book that combines mathematical theories and philosophy within a film-noir-esque comic.

“Improbable material for comic-book treatment? Not really. The principals in this intellectual drama are superheroes of a sort. They go up against a powerful nemesis, who might be called Dark Antinomy. Each is haunted by an inner demon, the Specter of Madness. Their quest has a tragic arc, not unlike that of Superman or Donald Duck.” Link!
