Posted in News, Spot The Poly, Videos with tags Aotearoa, bones, Cardiff, culture, Hema Temara, history, indigenous, Maori, museum, New Zealand, News, Polynesian, Spot The Poly, Te Herekiekie Herewini, Videos, Wales on November 17, 2009 by TheDiversePurseThe bones of twelve Maori people, one reportedly a female, are finally traveling back to New Zealand after being held in boxes at the National Museum and Gallery of Wales at Cardiff since the 1920′s.
The return of the bones stems from New Zealand’s government mandated Karanga Aotearoa program which negotiates recovery of ancient bones on behalf of the Maori.
The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa’s manager, Te Herekiekie Herewini, and co-ordinator Hema Temara held a short spiritual ceremony at the Cardiff museum so as to show respect for the remains. Herewini believes the return of ancient bones to their homeland is of utmost importance:
“This is significant for Maori as it is believed that through the ancestors’ return to their homeland, the dead and their living descendants will retrieve their dignity, and also close the hurt and misdeeds of the past.” LINK!

It was a mix between a game show and sketch comedy.
Former host Ken Ober was found unconscious at his home in Santa Monica. There are no reports as to what caused his death, although his agent stated Ober was recently complaining of “…headaches and flu-like symptoms.”
Here’s a clip below with contestants LL Cool J, Julie Brown, and Weird Al Yankovic
Hines Ward Helps Bi-Racial Youths Deal With Discrimination In South Korea

Pittsburgh Steeler, and 2006 MVP, Hines Ward recently hosted a group of eight bi-racial Korean youths to discuss their stories of discrimination, taunts, and banishment they’ve received in South Korea. One teenager even re-told his attempt at suicide as an escape from the harsh treatment he’s received as an Amerasian. Sadly, according to statistics, children of mixed unions often end up in poverty and are prone to suicide due to how they are treated in Korean society.
Ward, who himself is Korean on his mother’s side and African-American on his father’s side, hopes to change the children’s perspectives as well as the people of Korea. To do this, he established the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation; which fights to end racism against biracial Koreans.
“It’s a great culture. I love everything about it. But there’s a dark side to that culture. And me, I’m just trying to shed a light on that dark side and make Korea a better place than it already is.”
Wow. Sexy, athletic, and compassionate. He’s a triple threat! LINK

What’s Going On With Sammy Sosa’s Face?

What A Difference A Day Makes
You’ve probably seen the pictures of former Chicago Cub Sammy Sosa appearing at a Las Vegas event recently having a dramatically different skin tone. This much lighter version of Sosa had some speculating that he may have vitiligo or that steroid use is the cause of his new hue. According to a purported friend of Sosa’s, and Cub’s employee Rebecca Polihronis, Sosa was just as surprised he came out as bright as he did due to his new “cleansing” regimen.
“He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin, he was surprised he came out looking so white.”
So, does this “rejuvenation process” involve contacts and a relaxer? Whatever, Mr. Sosa.
All jokes aside this is an issue. If the rumors are untrue and he doesn’t have a skin condition, then his way of thinking is just sad. What was he being told and shown as he grew up in The Dominican Republic that made him think his darker features were unacceptable? Black, brown, white, yellow, red, purple – they’re all beautiful! Just accept it and own it! LINK via Dlisted

Clement (l) and McKenzie (r)
In a recent interview with Reuters Jemaine Clement, one half of the popular musical/comedy duo from New Zealand, hinted that there may not be a season three of their HBO show “Flight of the Conchords”. It is partly due to how much work is involved creating skits and unique songs for the series.
“It very likely might not…(return) it could come back in a shorter season or like a special.”
Clement also stated that he would need to discuss the future of the Emmy nominated show with fellow musician/actor Bret McKenzie. LINK! via Spasifik

Shalamar has always been a favorite of mine so of course I had to watch TV One’s Unsung series featuring the group. Jody Watley looked as gorgeous as ever not looking a day over 36 and I loved Jeffrey Danel’s international accent.
After watching it, I had their 70′s hit “Take That To The Bank” stuck in my head all day!
Here they are, with original members, Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel, and Gerald Brown performing on Soul Train. How could you not dance to this?
Jack Black Should Play Magic Devlin
Posted in Entertainment, Movies, Videos, WTF?! with tags Entertainment, funny, Jack Black, magic, Magic Devlin, Movies, Videos, WTF?! on November 2, 2009 by TheDiversePursePeep the video above for the wonder that is Magic Devlin! I was watching this thinking to myself “Is this guy for real?” I’m still not sure, but he’s entertaining and funny regardless.
From his synthesized music to his ill fitting spandex outfit and his habit of rockin’ out while doing magic tricks, I totally thought this would be an awesome character for Jack Black to play. I’d go see that movie.
Peru Harvests Water With Nets
Posted in Food & Drink, Uncategorized with tags fog, nature, nets, peru, science on November 2, 2009 by TheDiversePurse
In Peru, water can be a scarce necessity. But what they lack for in this resource, the country more than makes up for it in abundant fog. Recently scientists have devised a way to harvest the water present in fog by catching it with nets. Once enough water is collected it streams down makeshift gutters and is then collected into tanks at the bottom of the hillside.
Low income and rural families are now able to have a healthy, free source of water to drink and to much needed crops as well. LINK!
